This is done so that they have an angle of attack with respect to the local airflow and thus to create a tip vortex which draws energetic, swiftly moving outside air into the slow-moving boundary layer in contact with the surface. Vortex generators are positioned obliquely. They can be seen on the wings and vertical tails of most of the airliners. VGs are characteristically rectangular or triangular in shape, about as high as the local boundary layer, and run in spanwise lines typically near the wing’s thickest part. This is done to maintain a steady airflow over the control surfaces. They are usually placed very close to the leading edge of the airfoil. To achieve this, they are generally placed on the vehicle’s external surfaces and wind turbine blades. Vortex generators are most commonly used for delaying the separation of flow. This, thus, improves the effectiveness of wings and control surfaces, such as flaps, elevators, ailerons, and rudders. This delays the local flow separation, and aerodynamic stalling by eliminating some part of the slow-moving boundary layer that is in contact with the surface of the airfoil. When the airfoil or the body is moving with respect to the air, a vortex is created by the VG. VGs may also be attached to some part of an aerodynamic vehicle such as an aircraft fuselage or a car. It usually consists of a small vane fixed to a lifting surface, (or airfoil, such as an aircraft wing) or a rotor blade of a wind turbine.
